File Preparation FAQs

What file format should I submit?

PDF files are preferred and provide the most reliable results for print.
We also accept packaged Adobe Illustrator or InDesign files with all fonts and linked images included.

Other file types can be accepted, but may require additional setup or adjustments before printing.

What file types are accepted?

Preferred formats:

  • PDF (print-ready)

  • Adobe Illustrator (packaged)

  • Adobe InDesign (packaged)

Accepted but not preferred:

  • Canva exports

  • Serif Affinity files

Barely acceptable / may require extra prep:

  • Word documents

  • Excel files

  • PowerPoint files

  • JPG or PNG images

If you’re unsure, send what you have — our team will review it and let you know if changes are needed.

What does “packaged” mean for Illustrator or InDesign files?

Packaged files include:

  • The design file

  • All fonts used

  • All linked images

This ensures nothing is missing or substituted when your file is opened for printing.

What size should my file be?

Files should be set up at final trim size, including bleed if required.

If you’re unsure of the correct size, contact us before submitting — we’re happy to help.

Do I need bleed on my file?

For most printed materials, a 0.125" (1/8") bleed is required on all sides.

However:

  • Some large format items such as door wraps and wallpaper require 1" bleed. Please contact us to confirm the bleed your large format project requires.

If your project involves banners, signs, decals, or specialty materials, please check with us before finalizing your file.

What is bleed?

Bleed is extra image area that extends beyond the final trim size.
It prevents white edges after trimming.

Should I include crop marks?

Crop marks are helpful but not required if your file includes proper bleed and trim size.

What color mode should my file be in?

Files should be set up in CMYK color mode for print.

If your design uses spot colors (PMS), please clearly identify them in the file.

Will colors look exactly the same as on my screen?

Screens display color differently than print.
While we aim for accurate reproduction, exact color matching cannot be guaranteed unless a printed proof or PMS color is specified.

What resolution should images be?
  • 300 DPI for most print materials

  • 150 DPI or higher for large format items viewed from a distance

Low-resolution images may appear blurry or pixelated in print.

Should fonts be embedded or outlined?
  • PDFs: Fonts should be embedded

  • Illustrator files: Fonts may be outlined if preferred

  • Packaged files: Include fonts with the package

Can you fix or adjust my file?

Yes. Our prepress team can assist with:

  • File setup corrections

  • Bleed adjustments

  • Color mode conversions

  • Minor design fixes

Additional prep charges may apply depending on the scope of work.

What if I don’t have a print-ready file?

No problem.
Our design and prepress team can help prepare your file or create one from scratch.

Still not sure?

If you have questions or concerns, send us your file — we’ll review it and let you know what’s needed before printing.
